Fans attending Friday night’s Statesville High School game against visiting Lincolnton High got a little drama mixed with their football.
Statesville police say a young man wanted on several warrants was spotted at the game, and as an officer approached, the man tried to escape -- by running onto the field.
It happened during a break in the game, and players from the two teams were not involved in the police foot pursuit of the man. But it appeared on video coverage of the event, shot by WBTV, that at least one assistant coach tried to stop the man.
The man’s end run ended with a gang tackle, as several officers brought him down along the sidelines. Police said Saturday the man’s name is not being released, because he is a minor.
Statesville’s police fared better than the home team. Lincolnton won 44-13.
