CMPD Detective Randy Carrol 1969 - 2012

Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department Detective Randy Carrol passed away on Tuesday March 14, 2012.

Detective Carrol was assigned to CMPD's Armed Robbery Investigations Unit and served with the department for 18 years.

He leaves behind his wife of 20 years Lisa Edison Carroll, two daughters: Josie Carroll and Willa Carroll.

Randy was born November 15, 1969 in Pinehurst, N.C., the son of William Ray Carroll and the late Mabel Paul Carroll.

Randy Carrol was an avid runner and had completed two marathons, an enthusiastic golfer, a member of the Eastgate Masonic Lodge # 692. Randy graduated with the 113th training class.

A memorial services was held on Saturday March 17, 2012 at the Central United Methodist Church in Monroe North Carolina.

Cedar's Take:

There are dozens of touching guest book entries located here. But this one gives you a good idea the kind of CMPD Officer Randy was.

"I did a ride along with Randy when I was rookie almost 8 years ago and spoke with him whenever I saw him. He was a great person which in turn made him a great officer. I was riding with Randy, and I remember a car cutting us off and nearly hitting us, as we were in an unmarked Impala and Randy stuck his head out the window and said hey "It's your world don't worry about us" and to this day I use that saying when I get cut off in traffic:) Randy you will be missed." - Richard Nelson

Cedar Posts didn't know Randy Carrol but I imagine he was the kind of guy that sharing a beer with was always a pleasure and having him watching your back was always a blessing.

Randy's Memorial Service was held Saturday, of the more than one hundred people who attended the service including more than a dozen CMPD Officers, but there was not one member of Chief Rodney Monroe's command staff. Not the Chief or one Deputy Chief, Major, or Captain.

No doubt that had Officer Carrol died in the line of duty Chief Monroe would have been present or at least would have sent a member of his command staff out of respect. But Officer Carrol was no less someone who served the department and the City of Charlotte for faithfully for 18 years, often at the expense of his family. Frankly he and his wife Lisa and their two children deserved that respect, and it is embarrassing that the department's noticeably absent command staff failed to show.

Detective Carrol was an awesome Detective and honest Officer with high integrity. I am disgusted to learn no command staff went to pay their respects to Det. Carrol, his family and fellow officers. Sad.

That really is inexcusable, totally inexcusable.

But it just continues to show The total lack of respect Monroe has for his men.

Ths was a despicable display of that lack of resect.

If Monroe coudn't get anything personal from making an appearance, then he woudn't be there....that s the way he rolls......and who was his Captain, Major and Deputy Chief????

Detective Carroll was an awesome man.....he had a sign in his cube that said, "no success in work is worth a failure at home" He lived life doing the right thing, all the time......and was, as many, frustrated by the changing administration. He was funny, dedicated, loyal and honest to the nth. degree.
Thank you Cedar for recognizing his life and passing.....it is true........no one higher than a retired Sgt., other than a new liuetenent on the honor guard was there. What has happened to respecting your workers? Charlotte just lost one of their best, yet the brass paid no attention. Lisa, we all love you and will always be there for you and the kids.

Randy you did good brother rest now in peace we will look after your family. because we take care of our own. To hell with Rotney and his brown nosed white shirts.

Why go to funerals when there's basketball on TV?

8:14 what you bet Rotney had tickets to the NCAA in Greensboro?

I dare any member of the CMPD Command staff to brag about the great time they had in Greensboro.

So who was his chain of command? Who are the losers that had more important things to do than honor the service of Detective Carrol?

Cedar you know this is how Rodney rolls. I hear there was a blow up about him being on leave and getting disability payments during his illness. Would not surprise me if Monroe forbid his staff from attending, he is just that sort of vindictive SOB.

This is disgraceful. My father was a police officer (elsewhere) for over 30 years. The descriptions I read hear of Detective Carrol reminded me of him. Those sort of men seem to be a dying breed in police work these days. My dad passed away several years after retirement but the Chief and a good deal of the PD was there in full force for one of their own. Its bad enough that the general public doesn't appreciate what these men and women do for them but for that kind of indifference to come from the department is shameful.

Smathers, Leonard and Foster......makes sense that Monroe forbade people to go, because that is exactly his modus operandi, vindictive and vengeful! He and Harold have shown this pathetic "leading" stye over and over again. Although I am surprised Leonard didn't go......Does not surprise anyone that Foster and Smathers did not attend.

Sounds like he was a great guy.

Although it is shameful that command staff was not there, I have to wonder if Detective Carrol would have wanted them to be.

Would you?

11:21 I'm with you on that.

I've spelled it out to my wife, should I find myself no longer seeing daylight I'll be dammed if my family will let those jackasses stink up my funeral just so they can give the appearance that they care.

Agreed!!

Thanks Cedar for posting this, command not attending the guy's funeral was low and we won't forget this.

Is anyone shocked that CMPD command did not attend Randy's memorial service?

They are as clueless about our personal lives as they are about how to manage a police department.

Cedar,

Can you bring this story back to the top in a few days? I know it has been a week, and I did not know Detective Carrol, but I don't think it is time to move on yet. He deserves to be remembered.

I was thinking of putting it on the side bar for a while with a link to the story.

Up above Weather Dog.

What do you think?

Anonymous said...

I think that would be perfect.

This department and the wakos that run it should be ashamed of themselves. Hopefully this story will get to someone who will ask the chief why? I would really like to have an answer?

Please let Randy rest in peace...it does do any good to use his untimely and sad death as a platform to make this about you and your hidden agendas against CMPD. his life and death should be remembered for him and him alone now because of you all it will be remembered for who did and didnt go to his funeral. there are much better more important things going on in this world that need your attention than who was or was not at his funeral. at least dont be such a coward and put your name on your post if you are so concerned. i am sure anyone you have named in any of these posts would give you an audience to voice your concern. Randy rest in peace you will be missed by many.

Nice try Rob, but spin this as much as you want the fact is no one, repeat NO ONE from CMPD Command took the time to attend the funeral.

Ken Clark was the retired Sgt. that attended the service. Ken was Randy's supervisor until his retirement. RIP Randy, Our prayers go out to you and your family. That is all that matters.

I only recently discovered this site, so it may be so late that no one sees this comment. I would, however, like to set the record straight.

Vickie Foster was a great support to me during Randy's illness. She visited him regularly in the hospital, and called me often just to check on us. She let me know before the funeral that she would not be able to attend. Her absence at the funeral was not something that should be looked down upon. She was present the entire year leading up to Randy's death, and checked in on me after he was gone.

Captain Smathers was also very supportive, and checked in on me often in the year following Randy's death.

The seargents from the Robbery Unit were at Randy's visitation on Friday evening, and I am grateful for their presence and the respect they had for my husband.

There were people who were not available or present during this terrible time in our lives. Some of them very prominent people in the organization. But in the case of Captain Smathers, and Vickie Foster, and every single officer on the Armed Robbery unit, I could not have asked for a better or more loving support team.
