During the July 23, Charlotte City Council meeting CMPD Deputy Chief Harold Medlock told Charlotte's City Council members that CMPD wanted to install on a trial basis an acoustic listening system in one of Charlotte's "high crime" areas.
Council members were told that the system would cost $50,000.00 for the year trial run, and that the system would not be in place until after the DNC 2012 event.
Three weeks later the system is up and running in center city, an area that Chief Monroe has claimed time and time again is one of the safest in Charlotte and is seldom an area affected by random gun fire.
So what else might be left off the table?
How about, the contract with SST was inked weeks before it was presented to council, that there was only one proposal, that the contract was for a trail run only, and that a long term solution would cost 100's of thousands? Well no one is saying for sure.
What we do know is that adding Shot Spotter to the uptown area where the DNC and hundreds of Police Officers will be on duty 24/7 is pointless, unless the Shot Spotter includes the ability to "eavesdrop" on conversations something that Deputy Chief Medlock has denied is possible.
Furthermore if the Shot Spotter Technology is DNC centric why not pass the expense on to the DNC?
