Never leave the asphalt!
One rule NASCAR drivers will tell you never leave the pavement, it's better to hit the car in front of you rather than to leave the road. In short the car suddenly stopped in front of you is considerably more movable than a telephone pole or tree. Plus your brakes do little good sliding across the infield.
