Highway Patrol Pursuit Ends in The Death of Michelle Taylor Platt

The Charlotte Observer is reporting:

An 18-year-old Lincoln County woman who was being pursued by an N.C. Highway Patrol trooper died Wednesday evening when her truck crashed into trees, troopers say.

Michelle Taylor Platt, of Lincolnton, was killed in the wreck shortly before 10 p.m. on Bess Chapel Road, according to the Highway Patrol.

Trooper J.B. Thornburg tried to stop Platt for speeding shortly after 9:30 p.m. on N.C. 279, near Cherryville in Bessemer City, according to the Highway Patrol. But Platt, driving a Ford F-150, drove off and would not stop, troopers say.

Platt drove west on N.C. 279, then turned north on N.C. 150 into Lincoln County, according to the Highway Patrol. She made several other turns but lost control of the truck, slid off the road, and crashed into trees. She died at the scene.

The comments that have been posted on this story range from sincere condolences, to heart breaking remembrances to down right heartless.

I wonder who the people are that post comments like:

AnonyMoose wrote: "Her death has saved the state thousands in future law enforcement and incarceration expenses."

lipmedic wrote: "Thin the herd!"

Yackletoast: "She hits another car and deaths occur (Very possible) and a REAL TRAGEDY occurs. This is not a tragedy"

Buckeye03: "Nice grease spot on the side of the road"

I'm always surprised at the number of really cruel people in the world. I guess these are the same people who kick the family cat when no one is looking, steal french fries from their 5 year old and remind their wives how fat they have become.

Such sad small lives they must lead.

We may never know why this child tried to out run a State Trooper. But as a parent I think the only thing your can ever do is teach your children well.....

Now that reminds me of another old song by Graham Nash "Teach Your Children Well"...

You who are on the road
Must have a code that you can live by
And so become yourself
Because the past is just a good-bye
Teach your children well
Their father's hell
Will slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks
The one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why
If they told you, you would cry
So just look at them and sigh
And know they love you.

And you, of tender years
Can't know the fears
That your elders grew by
And so please help them with your youth
They seek the truth
Before they can die.

(Can you hear and do you care
And can't you see whe must be free
To teach our children what you believe in
Make a world that we can believe in.)

Teach your parents well
Their children's hell
Will slowly go by
and feed them on your dreams
The one they picks
The one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why
If they told you, you would cry
So just look at them and sigh
And know they love you.

Thank you so much for this. There are a lot of cruel people in the world and I didn't realize quite as much until I read some of the comments some of them were making. I'm an adoptive aunt of Michelle's and, unfortunately, the articles in the papers aren't completely correct but the truth will eventually come out. This is one that won't be laid to rest without people knowing the whole story, I can't help but believe. I just wish newspapers would stay out of this type of thing until they know what they're talking about. It causes so much more grief for the family when they're already going through so much.

Cedar,

You know anything about the HP tapping the pickup?

I heard he was trying to take her out with a "PIT Maneuver" any truth to that?

The cops are keeping this on the "down low" wonder if we will see the video soon?

I doubt it!

Cedar,

Do you have any other info?? We are getting nothing locally... Was this a case of overkill on the side of Law Enforcement or bad judgment by a young and inexperienced driver?

I've been telling my kids... you see the blue light! Stop!! The worst case scenario is you lose your license, but I still get to have you alive!

I am personally devastated by this accident because it occurred in my community and I was at a gas station only minutes after the chase passed. By the time I heard about it, this young woman was probably already dead.

I cannot imagine how the family is handling this. My thoughts are with them, especially during a season that should be so happy.
