Jack Sweeney

Matthews police are trying to determine why a man was walking in the travel lane of East Independence Boulevard early Sunday, shortly before he was struck and killed by two vehicles.

Jack Anthony Sweeney, 27, of Pineville, died at the scene, Matthews police Officer Jason Tyrrell said.

According to police, Sweeney was walking in the right lane of East Independence Boulevard about 12:50 a.m. Sunday when he was struck by a 2008 Chrysler Pacifica that had just entered the road from Matthews Township Parkway (N.C. 51).

Sweeney was thrown to the left lane, where he was struck by a 2007 Buick going in the opposite direction.

Police say neither the driver of the Pacifica, a nurse, nor the driver of the Buick, an on-duty Alcohol Law Enforcement agent, was injured. No charges have been filed in the case, Tyrrell said.

Sweeney a divorced father was originally from New York state. Mr. Sweeney employed as a General Manager of Hess Tires in Monroe, North Carolina. He was well liked according to personnel at the company who stated that the whole thing is quite a shock to everyone.

Funeral Service for Mr. Sweeney will be 3:00 pm Friday, February 12, 2010 at The Chapel of Hartley Funeral Home.

Well, we now know that the ALE folks cruise that stretch of 74 at last call.

There is a finite number of places he coulda been walking to or from. Wonder if ALE was staking one out....

Koby, very sorry for your loss.

Any idea what he was doing walking that stretch of road? Not interested in blame or making light, just trying to understand.

Did his car breakdown, or did he maybe get in a fight and bail out on foot?

From the instant I heard about this accident I've trying to piece together a why.

This is probably a big cover up by RoMo and Ray/Ray. They get blamed for everything else.

You people with the negative comments are rude i knew Jack for about 9 years and he was a good dude. If you have nothing good to say just go post somewhere else and maybe when someone you know or perhaps you yourself DIE someone will post negative things about you so you can see you are an ASSHOLE

I think the whole thing is an ironic tragedy. i saw his body in the middle of the road shortly after the accident and i will never forget that image. my heart goes out to his family and those that love him. and for those with idiotic, ignorant and insensitive comments.... fuck you! that was a human. not an animal!

I did not personally know Jack but I know a few of his friends that are dealing with his death. Koby first and foremost i am sorry for your loss. I dont know you either but I know that this has gotta be very hard on you! Even if he partied a lot that does not mean he deserved to die like this! Those of you that are making those comments should know that if this was someone that you cared about say a 'best friend' or 'loved one' of yours you should think about how you would feel about someone posting those things! You are very wrong for that! To the family and friends of Jack, I am very sorry for your loss! my thoughts and prayers are with each and every one of you!

jack was a great kid. he was very sweet and no one should ever have to lose a son, father or friend this way. anyone talking that nonsense has nothing better to do with their time except to try to hurt others with their words. rip little jack.

Jack was a wonderful person. He was full of joy, laughter, and compassion. Every time I saw him he made me die of laughing. His life should be celebrated although he will be greatly missed! Kerstin, Koby, and all of Jacks close friends and family are in my prayers. Im still having a hard time believing all of this is real...

Dear Anonymous who posted on Feb 10 at 6:42pm.....

You are a coward....

I am not sure about your spiritual beliefs, in fact, I'm not sure about my own....so I don't know whether or not Jack can actually see your post.

I do know that his parents, brother (who are my 2nd family) will read this and be horrified by your comments.

It doesn't matter why someone isn't with us any longer, the fact remains that they leave behind loved ones who hurt and suffer from their loss.

Hopefully, the moderator gets around to deleting your heartless post.
