Is East Charlotte Pizza Hut an Easy Target for Thugs? Not Last Night!
Three would be armed robbers should have ordered a cheese pizza to go late Monday night, instead they pulled a couple of guns and ordered employees into the back of the restaurant.
Gregory Hardy
Dauntrae Wallace
Gregory Hardy and Dauntrae Wallace were shot dead by a still unnamed Pizza Hut employee, both of the dead men were 21 year olds who had prior arrests and run-ins with law enforcement. Hardy was also a father of a little boy.
When one of the robbers began to beat an employee, the delivery driver who works at the Independence Blvd Pizza Hut drew his weapon and wasted no time in dispatching two of the three idiots.
Two of the thugs were declared dead at the scene and the third was still on the run early this morning. The employee a former Mecklenburg County Deputy Sheriff believes he hit the third crook solidly between the shoulder blades as he ran out of the store but say he may have only winged him.
According to WSOC TV:
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said at about 11:15 p.m., two employees were in the back of the business cleaning up for the night, when three men entered through the front door.
Police said the men attempted to rob the business by forcing the employees into the cooler, when one of the employees shot one of the men with his personal gun. The employee shot a second men, while the third fled the scene.
East Charlotte may be down but there is hope even if it has to become the Wild West to restore some law and order to the area.
Sadly it has reached a point where Chief Monroe's comstat numbers can't hide the truth. Crime is out of control in East Charlotte.
While bagging two thugs is nice it still speaks to the fact that crime rules East Charlotte and unless Charlotte's City Council wakes up and holds Chief Monroe accountable East Charlotte won't survive the next decade.
Cedar Posts Update:
Chances are pretty good the employee will be terminated, based on the Pizza Hut Employee Handbook that was emailed to CP this morning.
Excerpts of the manual as follows:
7. It is not possible to list all of the forms of behavior that are considered unacceptable in the work place. The following are examples of infractions of rules of conduct that may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment:
7.14 Possession of firearms or any dangerous weapon anywhere on company property or in any employee’s vehicle while at work or on company property.
7.23 Failure to protect company assets
7.41 Failure to follow proper internal and external security procedures
7.49 Admittance into the restaurant of unauthorized personnel before or after closing hours, including but not limited to, off duty employees
21. In the Event of Robbery
If a robbery occurs, follow these steps:
Remain calm and cooperate with the robber. The safety of employees and customers is what is most important.
Lock the door immediately after the robber leaves
Call the police
Call the Area General Manager/Coach
Direct employees not to discuss the situation but have them write down what they recall
Tell no one, other than the police, the amount of money stolen
But things could have worked out much worse for the Pizza Hut Employee. Last year a Brunswick, Georgia Pizza Hut Employee was shot and killed by robbers news coverage is here.

So Cedar Posts is using this as another reason to bring up what a terrible leader Rodney is?
Good, keep it up.
To quote Malcom X, "Truth is on the side of the oppressed."
Good Shooting! But Cedar I'm afraid you're right and I have to agree with everyone else it's time we take back the streets from the thugs that run loose in East Charlotte.
Monroe's CMPD has left us no choice. East Charlotte has become a waste land of violent offenders.
Chief Monroe wants to talk about how crime is down well tell that BULLSHIT to the employees of Pizza Hut!
Looks like that 2nd Ammendment is on the side of the working man!!!
Hate to break the news but we can't blame Monroe because we can't keep criminals behind bars!!! Why stop committing crimes? There's no consequences!!!
This is a perfect example for support of the second amendment. Putting a handgun in the hands of someone who has trained to use the weapon proficiently and develop the mindset necessary to engage when the time comes.
"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Proposed Virginia Constitution, 1776
"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms. . . disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. . . Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." -- Jefferson's "Commonplace Book," 1774-1776, quoting from On Crimes and Punishment, by criminologist Cesare Beccaria, 1764 -- Thomas Jefferson
"[A]rms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. . . Horrid mischief would ensue were the law-abiding deprived of the use of them." -- Thoughts On Defensive War, 1775 - Thomas Paine
I wonder what the true patriots of years gone by would think about government and society today?
I am in full support of a new partnership between the Police Department and Pizza Hut. By killing these two criminals how many future criminal acts were prevented?
Anon 1000hrs.
Probably many.
Cedar,
I understand your strong dislike for Romo, but to blame the acts of these 3 pieces of trash on him is ridiculous. Officers on the east side of Charlotte work extremely hard. So, don't blame CMPD for the crime rate. These losers get locked up everyday, and they're out before the paperwork is finished.
The court system is a joke and there is no real consequences to committing crimes.
Looks to me the following two are in direct conflict with each other????
7.14 Possession of firearms or any dangerous weapon anywhere on company property or in any employee’s vehicle while at work or on company property.
7.23 Failure to protect company assets
And as far as I am concerned the employee DID follow 7.23 in the best way possible!
Bet it will be a cold day in hell before I buy anything from Pizza Hut! or YUM! Brand products!
TO ANON 9:14: And these days the oppressed are NOT minorities!
But that hopefully will start changing Nov 2!!!!
I don't think Cedar is pointing the finger at the Independence guys, he's always been pretty much on our side.
He knows patrol does all the work and that you just can't stop some crimes.
And I agree the numbers lie, even when they are reported correctly and honestly the Chief and his circle tweak the numbers to give the perception of reduced crime.
Crazy ideas, like all hands, and the never ending musical chairs makes working as a team difficult.
The Chief will move on and we'll have another fool in charge, the only way to make a difference is to increase the blue on the street and a pay raise would help stop the turnover.
How is it CMPD's fault three dudes walked into a Pizza Hut and robbed it?
Adam, it's not CMPD's fault per se, but Monroe says crime is down, "I'm doing a good job, I'm so good I can predict where the next crime will happen".
According to WSOC 8 times in the last year a violent crime has happened within 1000 yards of the Pizza Hut on Independence.
A women says during an on camera interview "no way I'd be out here after dark" this is not Rozzells Ferry she is talking about and this is not some frail old white women from Myers Park, this is a 30 something sister who has some street smarts because she's talking about East Independence Boulevard!
CMPD's job is not only to arrest people, but to prevent crime.
We are all happy two thugs are dead, severs them right. But this could have gone either way. We might be reading about 4 dead pizza hut employees.
The only way to prevent this sort of thing from happening, is to get ahead on the crooks.
Police need to do their job, and it doesn't just mean getting the reported crime numbers down. Let patrol do thier job. We they make an arrest make sure it's done right.
One thing that has come from the Montgomery trial CMPD and the DA's office need to work on how cases are handled. CMPD needs to do a better job after the arrest and the new DA needs to listen to patrol and the sargents on the streets.
I've never met a CMPD officer who didn't know every thug in the neighborhood. CMPD brass needs to listen to patrol and stop worring about the stats!
We need to stop all this warm and fuzzy community policing and knock some heads over there!
Hey I'm glad the two mother f@#*ers are dead hope their Momma's are balling their eyes out!
If you can't do any better than raise a couple of thugs you shouldn't be having no babies!
1:53 PM
I understand the numbers thing and wish they would say, "Reported Crimes are down."
Anyway, that's not changing anytime soon. I just get annoyed when people blame police because someone got robbed or killed. Perhaps the offenders should give police a heads up so they can be there to stop it.
Sort of related to crime numbers and perception, I think: I once used the CMPD "Significant Event" log to track misdeeds in my neighborhood (Eastside) and could get info on out-of-the-ordinary events and 9-1-1 calls about 30 minutes delayed. Recently CMPD switched the site to "Crime Mapping" with data at least 10 DAYS old. Useless. Absolutely. Useless. And now it's gone. I think they're hiding, & don't want me to know whose house just got broken into. Very disappointing. Another brick in the wall?
I don't think Cedar is blaming the patrol officers for this. Every cop knows that nothing will deter that next crime except having a cop on every block and every business/house.
I've been on a traffic stop at a gas station and less than 5 minutes after I left it got robbed. Did me being there prevent anything? Nope, it just delayed it by about 15 minutes or so.
We need more patrol officers. And anyone who believes Chief Monroe's claims that more officers are on the street obviously doesn't work on patrol where we actually have less people answering calls than before the reorganization.
As to Anon 11:33am, I agree. You want to stop the turnover, how about making it worth our while to stay by not hiking up insurance rates, giving us no raise or a half raise and making us jump through hoops for stupid things (like this new wellness thing).
And the DAs office just needs a major overhaul. The DAs Office will mark down "insufficient evidence" or "not enough investigation" or "unable to prove intent" on a ton of charges just to clear them because they know they might not win in a jury trial. Instead of trying to put these people away, they are just dismissing them to clear the docket or agreeing to probation deals when they should be in prison.
As one grizzled old sergeant told me the other day, "...we need to get back to the old days where if you caused trouble, you got an old fashion beat down and major ass whooping"
"You didn't go to jail if we caught you breaking into a house, you went to the hospital."
