Monday Odds and Ends

Did you know that CMPD Officers "FAMILY" medical coverage that has become so expensive that many drop the coverage and find it "outside" the department?

Cedar Says: If you are one of those who have discovered this fact, and have signed up for the Blue Cross Advantage or other health insurance outside of the department Cedar Posts would like to here from you.

Props to Chief Monroe on earning his CJ degree!

Excellent idea sending CMPD guys to the "Windy City" to see first hand the nutties we'll have to deal with during the DNC 2012, and it is a good time to get a first hand look at the protesters as well.

Speaking of Chicago, did you know a rookie CPD Officer is paid 61k a year? That a sergeant at the top pay level in Chicago makes more than CMPD's Captains? The department wide pay scale for both sworn and civilan employees is here.

Cedar's Take: Why don't we pay our CMPD Officers a fair wage?

The cost of living in Chicago is 25% higher.

Yes. The cost of living is 25% higher. However, when you take 3/4 of 61,000 (taking into account 25% less for cost of living), CMPD rookies and those with less than 5 years of service still don't make that. They're short by about 4 grand.....

Cost of living my butt! You try rasing a family of $44,000 a year!

My wife works for CMS teaching at Eastover and between both of us our job security and potential for increase in income, is about in the crapper.

Sure if you are a member of FOR (friends of Rodney) you can get some sweet secondary employement. Otherwise making ends meet is not going to happen.

dont single out cops, Cedar. Try prosecutors, judges, etc. $75K vs 40K AND $150K vs $105K, for example. That's Chicago vs Charlotte. Joke pay here in the QC.

@ 2:14 if 44k is not enough for your find another job. If you became a cop thinking you were gonna be rich shame on you.

As I move into the last few years of my employment at cmpd the last thing I want to hear is a snot nosed NOOB, complaining about pay. If you depend on off duty to make ends meet your setting yourself up for failure also.
I raised a family with a wife who didnt work. We lived within our means. Try that.
This isnt about Rodney or anyone else. This is about self accountability...

Hey old guy, what is wrong? You think you did the right thing? So what is this, some kind of honor and duty bs you want to tell the world from your soap box? I'll give you props you sucked it up so good for you. Now listen up, that pension you are counting on, kiss it goodbye. Just like all across the country as here in Charlotte guys like Cooksey and Dulin are trying to screw us. Cut our pension, so you are damn right we are going to bitch about low pay.

@1236 - if you are moving on to your "last years of employment with CMPD," then it should be pointed out that you raised your family with a stay at home mom during a time when gas did not cost 3.75 a gallon. Nor did bread cost 2.50 a loaf and milk 3.58 a gallon. Plus, you got your 5% step increase and 3% cost of living adjustment each year until you maxed out. The last thing a "snort nosed JOIN" wants to hear is that you walked uphill, to and from school, with no shoes, in 10 feet of snow.

Should say "snot nosed NOOB.". Damn auto text!

why is there even a union?

let's rodney screw over honest, hard-working, well-qualified employees and ignore hiring and promotion standards until someone sues, and does nothing to negotiate with the city for better pay, safety, and health care.

what a waste

stop paying the union. pool the money and pay a lawyer

To everyone from the 25+ vets to those with less than 5, the last thing we need is to be at each others throats.......everyone has a big stake in this, from salaries to pensions. If they (the local politicos) can screw us over they will at the drop of a hat. Anyone who has been here for any length of time knows what a sore point the supplement is to them and would love to get rid of it. Can't predict what will happen tomorrow much less than 10 years from now but I do know we have to stick together and stop trashing each other over who got what when.

"stick together" doing WHAT exactly?

What is your point? Are you saying that getting an effective lawyer or an FOP leadership that will lead doesn't qualify as sticking together?

Sticking together in misery on a sinking ship with crap leadership doesn't help anyone except the few pirates stealing booty.

Since qualified people are lined up around the block for any government job, and the quit rate is miniscule compared to the private sector, I'd say government wages are more than adequate.

Have you seen Illinois' and Chicago's budget and debt lately? I'm not in favor of dumping the taxpayers and the economy down the toilet so that some donuteaters can get a cushy pension.
