If you have worked in Los Angeles you'll understand what I'm about to tell you. If you have only visited LA as a tourist there is no way you'll get it.
A dozen years ago, I worked on a several month project for a major international company. It required I spend a couple of weeks in LA, and after the first week I made myself pretty much at home.
Driving the PCH, the 405 and how get from LA proper to Hollywood to Malibu to Beverly Hills without ending up in Compton or worse.
My home away from home was top shelf the Wilshire in Beverly Hills a short ride from LAX.
But other than the total lack of real trees and the 3 hour time difference between Charlotte and the "West Coast" I didn't really mind living in LA. That is until my first trip home.
I had a "red eye" flight leaving LAX at 12:01 AM to Dallas and a connection to Charlotte at 10. Hoping to adjust to Charlotte time I called it a night at 7:30 and tried to grab a quick combat nap.
An hour and a half before the flight I had a company driver pick me up for the short ride to LAX.
Bad planning on my part, caused me to miss my flight. I arrived at the gate in time to see the 767 push back from the gate without me.
Much to my surprise at midnight LAX shuts down and within minutes of my flight lifting off to meet the sun, there was no one in the airport. And I mean know one.
For the first time in two weeks I was totally alone, and I mean alone.
There was not a cab, or bus or anything it took my driver an hour to get back to the airport and it was nearly 3 AM before I started to finish my nights sleep.
Four hours later I was on my way back to LAX, which was once again alive.
I took a direct flight to Charlotte and made it home in time for Saturday night dinner.
Even now years later I remember the feeling of LAX at 12:01 AM and how great Charlotte's trees looked from the air.
Green never looked so good!

Is this what is causing you to reminisce about LAX at midnight?

I used to think Christina Aguilera was hot. OMG what happened to her?
Yawn …
Cedar, I hope you know I was kidding. Read both articles around the same time and couldn't contain myself. LA has turned super nasty along with Hollyweird. Why does anyone think children need to see this or have drag queen story hour. It's beyond messed up.
I remember flying out of Burbank once back here, seeing the nice hills, super crowded neighborhoods, and nothing but development from the hills to the ocean. All I could think was, this place was probably really nice before people fouled it up so bad.
