Man Drowns While Mowing Lawn

Catchy Headline I guess?

From the Charlotte Observer:

By Steve Lyttle

A Rowan County man was killed Monday in a mowing accident, the sheriff's office says.

Genovevo Garcia, 53, of Cleveland, died when the mower he was operating slid into a farm pond and overturned on the man. Garcia was trapped under the tractor in the water for nearly a half-hour, according to police reports.

Investigators say Garcia was mowing the grass on a farm owned by William Russell, in the 1200 block of Phifer Road. Sometime around 11:15 a.m., while mowing at the edge of a pond, Garcia apparently lost control of the vehicle, and it tipped into the water.

Authorities say Russell, who was nearby, tried to pull the tractor off the victim but was unsuccessful. Firefighters arrived a short time later and finally pulled Garcia free after about 25 minutes.

He was taken to a Statesville hospital but was declared dead, an apparent drowning victim.

And so you would think whoa, what a freak accident. Well not so fast, it apparently happens a lot more than at least I thought.

This poor guy was pinned under his mower for more than an hour, but a co-worker held his head out of the water.

Sadly the guy under this mower didn't survive.

Come on people lets us a little common sense out there!
