Injun Summer 1907 By John T. McCutcheon

Yep, sonny this is sure enough Injun summer. Don't know what that is, I reckon, do you?

Well, that's when all the homesick Injuns come back to play; You know, a long time ago, long afore yer granddaddy was born even, there used to be heaps of Injuns around here—thousands—millions, I reckon, far as that's concerned. Reg'lar sure 'nough Injuns—none o' yer cigar store Injuns, not much. They wuz all around here—right here where you're standin'.

Don't be skeered—hain't none around here now, leastways no live ones. They been gone this many a year.

They all went away and died, so they ain't no more left.

But every year, 'long about now, they all come back, leastways their sperrits do. They're here now. You can see 'em off across the fields. Look real hard. See that kind o' hazy misty look out yonder? Well, them's Injuns—Injun sperrits marchin' along an' dancin' in the sunlight. That's what makes that kind o' haze that's everywhere—it's jest the sperrits of the Injuns all come back.

They're all around us now.

See off yonder; see them tepees? They kind o' look like corn shocks from here, but them's Injun tents, sure as you're a foot high. See 'em now? Sure, I knowed you could. Smell that smoky sort o' smell in the air? That's the campfires a-burnin' and their pipes a-goin'.

Lots o' people say it's just leaves burnin', but it ain't. It's the campfires, an' th' Injuns are hoppin' 'round 'em t'beat the old Harry.

You jest come out here tonight when the moon is hangin' over the hill off yonder an' the harvest fields is all swimmin' in the moonlight, an' you can see the Injuns and the tepees jest as plain as kin be. You can, eh? I knowed you would after a little while.

Jever notice how the leaves turn red 'bout this time o' year? That's jest another sign o' redskins. That's when an old Injun sperrit gits tired dancin' an' goes up an' squats on a leaf t'rest. Why I kin hear 'em rustlin' an' whisper in' an' creepin' 'round among the leaves all the time; an' ever' once'n a while a leaf gives way under some fat old Injun ghost and comes floatin' down to the ground. See—here's one now. See how red it is? That's the war paint rubbed off'n an Injun ghost, sure's you're born.

Purty soon all the Injuns'll go marchin' away agin, back to the happy huntin' ground, but next year you'll see 'em troopin' back—th' sky jest hazy with 'em and their campfires smolderin' away jest like they are now.

Cedar Says:

On every Sunday before Halloween up until the 1990's the Chicago Tribune ran Injun Summer by Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist John T. McCutcheon on the front cover of their Magazine section. It was a Halloween tradition as much as the the Night Before Christmas was to December 24th.

I suspect that if you are over forty it was a part of your Halloween as well since papers across the country usually found the column inches to print the generations old story.

But the tradition of running the story every Sunday before Halloween died in 1992.

According to the Tribune:

"The "Injun Summer" era ended on Oct. 25, 1992, when it appeared for the last time. The drawings may be timeless, but the text had outlived its day. Complaints had been voiced for several years about its offensiveness to Native Americans. Wisps of smoke have continued to rise from those smoldering leaves, however. Every fall, some readers complain that they miss it."

You can read more from the Tribune about McCutcheon's "Injun Summer" here.

Obsever Bags Mecklenburg BOCC Chair Roberts

In a surprise move the Charlotte Observer editorial board endorsed Jim Pendergraph over Jeniffer Roberts.

The Charlotte Observer says Roberts has "failed to take adequate responsibility for the county's many failures over the past two years, and has failed to hold top county staff accountable for those failures."

"On her watch, a county employee embezzled thousands of dollars from the county's Giving Tree charity for low-income children. More recently, federal officials criticized county leadership for failing to hold one of the county's largest mental health contractors accountable for its poor record-keeping. The former head of Mecklenburg Open Door racked up about $200,000 in unauthorized loans and credit card expenses."

"But both instances point to a severe lack of controls and proper oversight by county leadership. Roberts and County Manager Harry Jones did little to instill confidence that they were taking these problems seriously until public pressure forced them to do so."

The Charlotte Observer endorses Pendergraph and the two Democrats Dan Murrey and Harold Cogdell.

While Cedar Posts agrees with the Charlotte Observer regarding Roberts, it is abundantly clear that Cogdell and Murrey are equally at fault and are cast from the same mold.

Voting for Dan Ramirez, and Corey Thompson in addition to Jim Pendergraph will ensure that sanity is restored to the Mecklenburg BOCC.

The Best Photo from the 81st. Mallard Creek Barbecue

George Deaton, 100 yrs., sits watching foot traffic pass by during the 81st Mallard Creek Barbecue Thursday. Deaton started coming to the barbecue in 1941 and has been there ever since. He used to help cook the barbecue when volunteers dug ditches and laid racks across them to cook the meat. In another month, Deaton will celebrate his 101st birthday. Friday's Check This Out!

CMS Waddell High School Closing Sudden Change of Plans

The initial plan called for Waddell's students to move to Harding and South Mecklenburg high schools. But Charlotte Mecklenburg School System announced just two hours before a public forum that Harding High School would close instead.

At the forum, Superintendent Peter Gorman faced the crowd and apologized for the abrupt change. He said that given the school board's goal of protecting neighborhood schools like Waddell, closing Harding made more sense.

Waddell High School is named for CMS Board Member Joyce Waddell's late husband Dr. E E Waddell. Waddell was on the chopping block for a week, then two hours before Tuesday's public forum Waddell was spared. Of course CMS says the quick 180 had nothing to do with Board Member Joyce Waddell.

Say Hello to One of Charlotte's Helpful 311 Operators

Steven Rivers found himself under arrest last last weekend for DWI and in the process gave the arresting officer a hard time. So add resisting arrest.

Just to make things a little twisted Rivers has been the subject of several drug charges.

But wait it gets better. Seems Rivers also accessed the CMPD computer system to review confidential information in the police department’s computer system.

Can you say busted? Steven Rivers, 39, resigned from his position as an operator at the city's 311 information system on Wednesday, the day before a scheduled hearing to discuss his possible termination, said city spokeswoman Kim McMillan.

According to CMPD: After his arrest, Rivers accessed information about his DWI charge, as well as other cases in which he was a suspect, through an internal police database that includes confidential information, said Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Maj. Eddie Levins.

The system has a feature that allows police to examine which information has been viewed and by whom.

Police haven't charged Rivers but are investigating the incident as an unauthorized access to a government computer, a felony, Levins said.

Why Rivers wasn't fired after his 2007 arrests is beyond me.

Crazy Fall Weather

Tuesday and Wednesday saw more than a dozen tornados moving across North Carolina.

This cloud forming East of Forest City was part of the system that would later destroy buildings and homes less than 30 miles to the northeast.

WCNC's Brad Panovich offers some very detailed analysis of the storms with the posting of "Vortex Hole during Vale, NC Tornado".

On the night of Tuesday October 26th, 2010 a strong Tornado touched down near the Cleveland/Lincoln county line and the damage was rated EF-2 by the national weather service in Greer, SC. It moved Northeast to an area just 2 miles west of Vale, NC in Lincoln Co. Below is the damage path that was about 3 miles long and 200 yards wide. Max winds were estimated at 135mph. Here’s a link to the PNS from NWFO GSP and here are the aerial pictures of the destruction from our website wcnc.com

Halloween is SUNDAY!

Some parents are confused about Halloween and think that maybe they should take thier kids out for trick or treat on Saturday so that the kiddies will not be sooooo tired at school on Monday morning. The other concern is that might be on some insane "sugar high" and act all ADD.

I really should nominate today's parents as a group for the "Idiot of the Decade" Award.

When I was a kid we went door to door by ourselves. Older brothers took little sisters, and out parents were nowhere is sight. You think I'm kidding, well as case in point do you see any parents tagging along in the Great Pumpkin? Now days its a parade of parents who hover over their children. And many of the kids are "driven" house to house.

Last year Mrs. Cedar who loves holidays, greeted the neighborhood kids in full costume. Scary enough, but more spooky than Friday and 13th.

After nearly 100 kids that came to the door, one little 5 year old started to cry when my "spooky" wife approached. Keep in mind Cedar Posts doesn't dress up, Ever! (OK there was that time I went to a party as a boy scout. Let's just say is was an adult party and I'm good with knots.) So I intervene dressed in my very non threatening jeans and polo shirt and the little princess goes into complete hystirics flowing tears, gasping, threbling and all. The mother runs up gives me a GTH look, calling us horrid people, as she storms down our driveway.

Problem solved this year Mrs. Cedar will be dressing up as "Little Bo Peep" emphasis on the peep part. Can you say Baa Ram Ewe?

Women Arrested on Sex Charges Speaks Out

Maybe the headline should Charlotte Escort vents?

I thought this was an interesting response from Kristie Browning Carpenter who was arrested a couple Fridays ago.

Cedar Posts prior coverage of the arrest of Kristie Browning Carpenter is here.

Hard to tell who she's raging at CP, the ex-client/stalker? In it's unedited version is Kristie's response.

Geez, Thanks for making me one of the top 3 searched in the Charlotte area. This is all a result of the arrogant asshole who has been stalking me since early May. The bastard did buy me a car in exchange for an arranged marriage in order to get him legal in this country. Now that I have dropped the car back off with him, this is his twisted way of getting back at me for rejecting his sick ass. I just want to set the record straight...

1. If I was an escort he has been calling he would have had the correct phone number not some pulled out of the air shit from what is probably the real escort he has been calling.

2. I am not, and never have been, a "coke whore". And if I was why would I allegedly be charging $200/hour when all I would need if $25-$50 for a quick fucking hit.

3. If I only cater to upscale men, why the hell would I be with a middle-management IT douche bag who isn't even a citizen from a bank.

4. The only reason he did this was to try and hurt me and cause me to lose my kids which he knows is what would hurt the most.

5. He has gone as far as to state he could kill me and be on the next flight out of the country and never get caught.(The police have all this information, so CEDAR if you wanna follow a story try getting it right for a change.)

6. Finally, this is my life, and last time I check this was a free country, I can whatever the hell I want with it. I am a happily married women and the last thing I need to do is "whore myself out" as you put it, my husband takes damn good care of me and our kids.

So, Naseem Mohammed, please find you next victim somewhere else. My friends and family who know the shit that he has put me through knows that this is a completely fabricated pile of shit, and to everyone else who chooses to believe everything you read take your head out of your asses and go to hell.

Naseem will be the first to get this due to his computer alerting him to everything that comes up on the net with my name on it. At least I had the balls to post with my real name and not under anonymous like everyone else.

Michael Harvey Indicted

No real surprise news here, but to make the murder charge formal, a Mecklenburg grand jury charged Harvey for murder in connection with the September death of Valerie Hamilton the daughter of Concord's police chief.

Harvey, 34, was also indicted on a charge of larceny of a motor vehicle - a 1996 Chevrolet Blazer. The vehicle belonged to an acquaintance of Harvey's and was used in his escape to Western New York.

Cedar Posts has learned that the toxicology report has been in the hands of officials for two weeks but that they are not yet ready to make the contents public.

Firebird Feels The Love

According to Mark Washburn, more than 50 sturdy, mirrored tiles around the base of "Firebird," the official greeter of the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, are busted.

"Lower ones, maybe from accidental collisions with skateboards.

Upper ones, including a hand-sized tile six feet off the ground, are a mystery."

Unless you consider kids who are Michael Jordon wannabes. "watch me smack this dude where it hurts"

Kudos to CMPD's Rodney Monroe

Cedar Posts has been an advocate for the guys on the street, but seldom have I found joy in some idea that comes down from the white porcelain throne. But here's an idea that makes sense, the return of the Paddy Wagon or in CMPD parlance "transport".

So props to Chief Monroe for this idea!

The idea is simple rather than have arresting officers take those in custody all the way downtown to the the intake center they simply call for transport. This is a great idea because in allows the arresting officer to hit the streets and catch more bad guys.

Of course a good idea with bad execution is just a bad idea. While in concept this is great thinking, but Charlotte/Mecklenburg has only three "transport" vans, one which is broken and currently out of service.

According to one officer assigned to "transport" their instructions are to deliver as many prisoners from the streets to the intake center as they can. This often leaves officers in South and North divisions sitting on the side of the road for an hour or more.

So how about some funding for a couple of new prisoner transport vans?

Best Political Ad of 2010 Maybe Even The Decade

Who could forget Barbara Boxer chastizing Brig. Gen. Michael Walsh of the Army Corps of Engineers to call her “senator” not “ma'am,” because as she put it “I worked so hard for that title.”

The video, first posted Friday on Andrew Breitbart’s Big Government website, lampoons Boxer’s cranky moment during a Senate hearing last year and ending with the tag line, we're called her senator for more than 20 years, it's time to call her ma'am again.

Hottie of the Week Jennie Finch

As the Baseball season winds up for the final pitch, we can't help but think of the boys and in this case the girls of summer who were added to the ranks of players who retired from professional sport. We submit 30 year old Jennie Finch who retired from professional fast pitch softball on October 20, 2010.

Cedar Posts likes the fact that this hottie of the week looks good in heels or boots and the girl knows how to get it over the plate.

Have a great Week!

Cedar's Picks Election 2010

Dan Ramirez

Republican for Mecklenburg County Commission

Few people I've met over the years impress me like Dan Ramirez. Serious, hard working, and greatly concerned about Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

The sur name confuses a lot of people, many who expect democrat are surprised to find they are talking to a fiscally conservative Republican.

Currently the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners has 3 at large, tax and spend democrats, Roberts, Cogdell and Murrey who were elected on the Obama wave of 2008.

Since the beginning of 2009 Mecklenburg County has been rocked by one, scandal after another. Giving Tree, DSS, ABC Board, Mental Health so many red flags but the BOCC did nothing.

Now the same board that has looked the other way as Harry Jones ruled his empire without regard for the taxpayer, plans on giving Mecklenburg County citizens the biggest tax hike in years, to help balance Harry Jones' budget.

Of all the votes you can make on November 2nd this is the one that will directly affect your checking account. We need to take back Washington but more importantly we need to take back Mecklenburg County.

Tell the BOCC:

"GET OFF MY BACK AND STAY OUT OF MY BANK ACCOUNT!"

VOTE FOR DAN RAMIREZ on November 2nd!

Alvin Greene At the South Carolina State Fair

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Long-shot U.S. Senate candidate Alvin Greene made a surprise campaign appearance in Columbia on Wednesday at the state fair -- right in the middle of a live WIS News 10 broadcast!

Anchor Ben Hoover, surrounded by a group of smiling children, was telling viewers about the fair's opening day specials, including $1 admission and $25 unlimited rides. As he spoke, a man in a green hat with an "A" on it and wearing a green T-shirt labeled "GREENE" pushed through the crowd to stand over Ben's left shoulder.

Unaware of his famous guest, Ben continued to talk about the fair's attractions while Greene smiled and waved at the camera. As Ben tossed the shot back to anchor Judi Gatson in the studio, Greene did something unthinkable for a serious Senate candidate, holding up two fingers behind Ben's head to give the award-winning journalist "bunny ears." Greene said on Thursday he was actually giving the victory sign.

Greene's actions left state Democratic Party Chairwoman Carol Fowler searching for an explanation. "He has no experience in running for office of course, and insisted in starting with one of the top offices," Fowler said. "But you know, on November 3 his 15 minutes of fame will be over."

Greene is trying to unseat Republican incumbent Sen. Jim DeMint after winning a surprise primary victory over Charleston politician Vic Rawl. The state Democratic Party has not supported Greene's campaign, and the party's booth at the state fair has no Greene campaign materials or literature. "Nobody believes that Alvin Greene is going to be elected to the United States Senate," said Fowler. "From the day after the primary, nobody has thought that Alvin Greene had the ability to be elected."

You Might Not Like It

A little housekeeping.

I have received a rather nasty email about my coverage of the Valerie Hamilton murder.

This author's choice to post details about the Valerie Hamilton case was not taken lightly. While some might feel that posting Ms. Hamilton's arrest for DWI and Driving After Consuming Under the Age of 21 was low and shameless, it is still a fact and helps ro understand where the case was going.

Local news media is often constrained by budget cuts and political pressure, where as blogs like Cedar Posts are considerably better at chasing down information and thinking outside the box.

Sometimes this blog gets it wrong.

Many of the comments posted about the Valerie Hamilton murder were critical of my questioning as to whether or not Ms. Hamilton as a party girl and drug user.

I'm not 100% certain I got it right. I know the toxicology report has been on hand since last Wednesday and suspect that the reason we have not heard the details is that it is not a pretty picture.

Other themes of criticism in the past have been, you can't spell, you are racist, you don't understand basic grammar and someone was even low enough to crack on my ever thinning hair.

I'm pretty tough skinned and rarely delete comments, even those comments that are really nasty or attack me personally.

However I have zero tolerance for people you put F-bombs all over a otherwise PG post. That's just stupid and I have no patience for stupid.

And in that thinking, (Stupid) sending an email that threatens to poison my dogs even if just a nasty taunt is pretty low.

But let me sum it up with a quote from Mark Wahlberg "The Shooter" Bobby Lee: "You don't understand how serious this is. They killed my dog".

I can't think of any better excuse to exercise my right to bear and use arms than doing something to one of my dumb totally lovable Labs.

Nuff said Cedar Out!

Update

Frankly I can only stand so much of crime and politics and since the Braves are done for the year as are the Panthers, the need for on-line humor and entertainment has never been greater.

Guys are weird. Sure women exhibit some strange behaviors from time to time – mainly involving beauty tools that resemble medieval torture devices or our propensity to over-analyze everything – but guys, too, have their own freakishly odd yet charming gender-specific quirks if you observe them closely. You know, like primates at the zoo. Here are a few of my favorites:

Inside-out underwear
Because you only have to do laundry half as often if you wear ‘em twice as long.

Grunting while lifting weights
We get it: “Big. Strong. Man.” (Grr.) Next time I’m at the salon enduring a 3-hour highlight, I’m going to let out a barbarian-like wail when I bend over to pick up another copy of US Weekly.

The handshake hug
Women hug. Men can’t be seen doing such things. The result: The handshake/pull-it-on-in-for-the-good-stuff move. I’ve tried this with some of my guy friends, and it really just ends up with someone inadvertently touching my boobs. Hey, wait a minute…

CMPD Issues Warrant for Tracy Bauguess

The Next Governor of South Carolina?

Photos of Nikki Haley continue to circulate that show Haley wearing traditional Hindu gagra choli and a bindi.

Honestly I'm not sure about this. Frankly my knowledge of Hinduism and the Siki religion Niki Haley was raised with before converting to Christianity is really limited. The Hindus I know seem like good people.

Being raised an Episcopalian makes you think everyone drives either a BMW or Mercedes and that the Dolly Lama is a farm animal in an eastern Tennessee theme park's petting zoo.

So I'll let the folks at FITSNEWS take it from here.

In the interest of full disclosure the man behind FITSNEWS is Will Folks one of two men who have claimed to have "hit it" at one time or another, something that Haley denies.

But based on Haley's inability to pay her taxes on time, her inability to draw a clear line between fact and fiction Cedar Posts suggests

Thumbs Down as far as electing her to South Carolina's highest office.

More on Nikki Haley from the Charleston City Paper is here.

Mecklenburg and York County Congress Picks

No one wants to back a loser and while winners in political races are usually easier to pick than college football games this year may not be the norm.

US House of Representatives District 8 - Here's the toughest race in North Carolina as I see it. Larry Kissell vs Harold Johnson. This race will go down to the wire. Kissell was swept into office on a wave of Obama mania defeating Robin Hayes 55 to 45 percent. With very little help from the RNC Johnson may still be able to squeeze out a win. If he does, we'll hope that Harold Johnson sheds the "big guy" image and gives Nancy Pelosi some serious HELL!

Larry Kissell

Harold Johnson

US House of Representatives District 9

Seems time and age have taken a toll on Charlotte's best known politician Sue Myrick. She's always been just a little quirky and odd but lately she seems just weird. Her long running feud with Muslims and Latinos had done nothing to help Charlotte. Much of her rhetoric is so far out in right field most of us just tune her out. Let's hope a close race gives her a wake up call.

Jeff Doctor

Sue Myrick

US House of Representatives District 12

You might as well vote for the worst. Mel is Charlotte's minority representative in congress. The 12 district designed to give African Americans a voice in congress. If you live in Mr. Watts district there really is no other choice. So vote for the winner. Republicans are smart enough to pick other battles.

Mel Watt

Greg Dority

US House of Representatives York and Lancaster County

U.S. Rep. John Spratt has been around just about forever in fact 28 years is long enough. The old goat's time is up and fiscally conservative State Senator Mick Mulvaney should come out on top. But Spratt's attack ads featuring a failed development are getting notice, even if the ad uses a twisted set of facts to connect Mulvaney to the project. Cedar Posts says time for the old goat to go back to the farm.

John Spratt

16 Year Old Pen Bomber ID'd

Say hello to 16 year old Jessie Bauguess. Or at least that's what the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's office says.

DOB 12/11/1993 6' Tall 313 Pounds A full beard and balding? I guess.

Charged with

MALICIOUS USE OF EXPLOSIVE DAMAGE PROPERTY
FELONY MALICIOUS USE OF EXPLOSIVES INJURY
MISDEMEANOR POSSESSION OF WEAPON ON SCHOOL GROUNDS (CHAR-MECK)
FELONY ARSON/UNLAWFUL BURNING RESULTING IN SER.INJ TO FIREFIGHTER 3 COUNTS

Police are currently searching for Tracy Bauguess, who is Jesse Bauguess’s mother. She has been charged with three counts of malicious injury by use of an explosive device and one count of possession of a weapon of mass destruction.

Police said Tracy Bauguess drives a purple Honda Civic, with the North Carolina tag XRJ-2678. Anyone with information about her whereabouts is asked to call 911.

Officers Shooting of 15 Year Old Could Have Been Avoided

Jeffrey Green, 15, learned a really hard lesson Saturday night. But it is going to take more than police officer shooting a young man to change a culture that has become known for hysterics whenever the Police are called.

According to a CMPD press release Green was not involved in his mother's stabbing, and another man was later charged in the case. Police described the shooting as "a very unfortunate incident."

At the risk of sounding like a bigot what is it about black folks that turns a domestic argument into a shooting? What makes it so hard to remain calm and let the police take care of matters? What is it that turns a break-up into such carnage?

So much so that it takes a near fatal shooting, no less than 2 dozen police officers, fireman, medics and the chief of police to restore order.

I asked some current and former CMPD officers and they all offer basically the same explanation, "its a cultural thing", "just how its been since the marches on Montgomery", "its genetics". It's something that they learn to expect in certain neighborhoods.

About a half dozen times in the past three months crowds have gathered when police were called for various reasons to predominantly black neighborhoods. Sometimes they are genuinely concerned citizens, but just as often they are taunting the police, expressing their frustration or contempt.

Whatever the reason it needs to stop. Taunting police while they are doing their job is not only disrespectful, but it endangers the lives of all involved.

Running down the street screaming you've been stabbed, does absolutely nothing to help the situation and in this case nearly cost a young man his life.

Knocking off the craziness will go a long way to avoid the shooting of another young man like Jeffery Green.

It's been three years since Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Officers Jeff Shelton and Sean Clark were killed in the line of duty. They were killed responding to a disturbance call at the Timber Ridge apartments.

You can bet CMPD officers think about Shelton and Clark every time they respond to a call where there are a number of people gathered.

Respect this fact. Respect our police officers and stop the hysterics.

UPDATE:

CMPD PRESS RELEASE REGARDING THE SHOOTING OF JEFFERY GREEN

October 18, 2010:

Update in Officer involved shooting in the North Division
Homicide Unit Detectives continue to investigate the shooting incident involving Officer Matt Wilson as he responded to an Assault with a Deadly Weapon/Knife call on Brandie Glen Drive. This is a very unfortunate incident and our thoughts remain with the young man and his family as well as Officer Wilson and his family.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that Officer Wilson was dispatched to an ADW/Knife call and that the suspect was possibly still on scene. When Officer Wilson arrived on scene he located Valinda Streater, the female victim of a stabbing, down the street from the actual location of the stabbing. After a brief initial interview with Ms. Streeter, Officer Wilson walked towards her home, in order to check on her elderly parents who were still inside the house, and to look for a possible suspect. As Officer Wilson walked towards Ms. Streater’s home, his attention was drawn to two subjects, one of which appeared very agitated walking towards him and holding a knife. Unbeknownst to Officer Wilson at the time, this individual was Ms. Streater’s 15 year old son, Jeffery Green. Officer Wilson gave several commands to Mr. Green to drop the knife; he did not drop the knife and continued walking towards Officer Wilson.

Based on statements from Officer Wilson, he feared for his life and fired his service pistol striking Mr. Green who was armed with the knife. Mr. Green immediately ran from the scene and was located a short distance away behind a house. Medic was called for Mr. Green and he was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment. During a search of the area, a 12 ½” knife was located in a grassy area immediately adjacent to the scene of the shooting.

Several witnesses have come forward to give statements as it relates to this incident; however, at this time we have yet to interview Mr. Green. We continue to canvass the neighborhood for additional witnesses and request that anyone who has information to add to this investigation call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a Homicide Unit Detective. Detective B. Ward is the lead detective assigned to the case. In addition, you may also call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.

The officer involved in this incident has been identified as Matthew R. Wilson. He is assigned to the North Division and was hired on January 28, 2008. Officer Wilson has been placed on paid administrative leave which is standard procedure whenever an officer is involved in a shooting. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division will continue to investigate to ensure that all department policies and procedures were followed.

Look Out Here Comes Elevation Church

This past Sunday while driving down Charlotte's I-485 beltway, a woman in a red mini van tried to pass me on the right. When she realized she couldn't she promptly flipped me the one finger salute. Keep in mind I'm doing better than 70 in a 60 MPH zone the traffic is heavy.

She tried a second time only to be brake checked by the car ahead of her. The hysterics, contorted facial expressions and silent stream of four letter words sent my way were met with the priceless look of horror on her children's faces.

On her third attempt I eased off the gas enough to let Mrs. Road Rage swerve over into my lane, the red mini van rocking hard to one side, nearly turning over.

I had to laugh at the Christ is the Answer bumper sticker and the Elevation Church logo on the rear window of the dirty red mini van as it sped down the road.

I'm always amazed at the people who are Christians in name only and I have become increasingly weary of those who wear their religion on their sleeves.

Exploding Pen Shuts Down CMS School

Before anyone gets all worked up the exploding pen at the CMS Turning Point Academy is supposed to be a harmless prank. However it seems that the CMS pen may have been juiced up.

The prank pen should be made as shown here.

The CMS student received very minor injuries, more so than should have happened with the prank pen. But if you added more gunpowder it could cause a good bit of nastyness.

Later this afternoon CMPD and CFD with a search warrant in hand raided a home. Reports as of 5:00PM state that 3 CFD firefighters were taken to the hospital and several arrests were made at the home.

Jamie McMurray Pure Class

If you missed the end of the Bank of America 500 you missed a class act. Jamie McMurry pull out of the pack for a great win, and another attempt at taking to the press without tearing up.

Kristie Nicole Browning Arrested

Here's an interesting twist. A random check of the weekend's arrests brings up Kristie Nicole Browning who is arrested for oppps "working girl" and who I swear could be some kid's soccer mom. A few clicks later and well darn she's a hooker "rock star" and an infamous one at that.

Turns out Ms. Browning aka Carpenter has burned a few bridges and one of those happened to be a Bank of America IT guy. So what do IT guys do when they get burned? Well apparently they blog about their sad choice in women.

Kristie is all over the place a dozen names, ages and a dozen descriptions and the Bank of America guy feels ripped off. A quick google of her phone numbers and its clear she was a busy girl. Cedar Posts isn't the morality police so you be the judge.

First up a link to the IT guys one page blog about Kristie which is here. Then there's the photo expose' on Kristie which is here. Caution the links are much pretty "R" rated.

What do you think? Was the guy right or wrong? And the bigger question why did CMPD's Vice Unit target her for a sting? Payback for the IT guy? Or did she burn a bigger bridge?

Teen Shot By CMPD Officers

Late Saturday CMPD officers responded to a 911 call. Dispatchers directed two officers to Brandie Glen Road and described the situation as a women "reporting being stabbed". At the same time medic was dispatched and well as Charlotte Fire.

When officers arrived they found the victim in the street in front of the residence, where she reported that the suspect might still be inside.

At this point the radio traffic ticked up. Additional officers were requested as the two officers approached the residence with their weapons drawn. Within seconds a man approached officers screaming in a profanity laced tirade. Both officers commanded the man to stop and drop his weapon (described as a shiny object in media reports). The man continued to yell and approach the officers.

A split second later officers fired at the man striking him multiple times. It turns out the man was the victim's teenage son and the shiny object was neither knife or gun.

(In a statement released early this morning police said "It appears that the son was on scene very upset."

One email to Cedar Posts suggested that the object was a cell phone.

Media reports say the young man was hit several times and was also transported to the CMC. He is expected to survive.)

At this point the radio traffic went crazy and total confusion erupted. Dozens of officers including Rodney Monroe arrived on the scene.

Shortly after getting the situation under control police arrested Bruce Jenkins 39 and charged him with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

But here is where thing go stupid. News media was held 2 blocks away as were many residents who live nearby, and the neighborhood quickly broke down into complete chaos.

By 11 PM Saturday, people who identified themselves as family members of the victims were at the scene, visibly angry, yelling and at times cursing. The decorum of the area was described by one CMPD officer as typical for this area. "You really need to be on your toes over here when something like this happens."

Chief Monroe refused to talk to the media on hand. Nine hours later the names of neither the officers involved or the victims have been released.

CP's thinking:

This is what is wrong with Rodney Monroe's CMPD, the general theme of deceit and cover up give the public a deep sense of wrong doing.

Cedar Posts thinking is based on emails from several sources: CMPD officers responded correctly given the situation. And while the teenage son of the stabbing victim was shot several times, his failure to comply with officers instructions left them little choice.

Cedar Posts Update:

According to a CMPD statement officer Matt Wilson has been placed on administrative leave pending completion of an investigation. While details are not completely clear the CMPD statements say a 15 year old male approached office Wilson carrying a large knife office Wilson commanded the subject to drop the knife and stop. When he continued to advance towards officer Wilson the officer discharged his weapon striking the subject.

Corey Thompson's Press Release Directed at BOCC Chairman Roberts - Yawn

Corey Thompson's campaign issued a press release late last week. It was so wordy I posted a comment begging Mr. Thompson to revise the release. And to drop me an email if he changed the content.

My comment was promptly deleted.

Years ago I was waiting to take delivery of a new Toyota 4 Runner. In the office they had one of those tacky motivational posters. This one read:

"Sampson slayed a lion with the jaw bone of an ass.... everyday a hundred car salesman kill deals the same way."

In other words sometimes you need to know when to shut up.

This famous quote also applies:

Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake. Napoleon Bonaparte

I think you can see where I'm going with this.... Thompson didn't need to say anything, Dunlap had taken the bait offered by Bill James and he didn't need any help in looking like an idiot.

But Thompson's press release mistake was fatal on many levels, first it was too wordy, second it was extremely hubris, and finally it was not necessary and Roberts more than likely will not even not even respond.

I've been pretty disappointed in Thompson's campaign, his web site which started off in good form, has died a slow and painful death and now looks dated and stale. His on line events calendar is empty, not a big deal just real sloppy.

His resume' is impressive but in a way too impressive, with a overwhelming feel of embellishment.

But the over the top Press Release may prove fatal. Mecklenburg County taxpayers want someone who will listen to them and work with them, not someone who wants to talk down to them and do things his way. Mr. Thompson seems to have forgotten who goes to the polls on November 2nd Those who vote in midterm elections, by and large come in two type, retired and political junkies. Neither appreciate double talk and a slick Willy style.

THOMPSON TO ROBERTS: REESTABLISH DECORUM ON COUNTY BOARD

Political newcomer challenges incumbent leadership of a Commission struggling to maintain control

Charlotte, NC- Corey Thompson, a political newcomer and Republican candidate for Mecklenburg County Commission At-Large, is calling on board Chairman Jennifer Roberts to issue a public statement of reprimand to those Commissioners who participated in what Thompson describes as “political irresponsibility” displayed during last week’s board meeting.

The event Thompson was referring to involved a heated confrontation between several board members, during which Democratic Commissioners berated and chastised their colleagues throughout what was originally intended to be a productive dialogue over policies and proposed solutions to critical problems in Mecklenburg County. Thompson added, “Instead of embracing the responsibility of the seat to which they were elected, several Democratic Commissioners turned the dais into a political pulpit, using the time typically allotted for discourse for their own self-promotion and political grandstanding. This took place while Commissioners were holding a regular-scheduled meeting funded by the taxpayers of Mecklenburg County.”

Perhaps the most disturbing moment came when District 3 Commissioner George Dunlap (D) conveyed an ominous warning about what would happen if Republicans took the majority of Commission chairs as a result of the upcoming elections, and then even went so far as to question the religious faith of a fellow board member. Said Thompson, “While there is no rule against using the dais for political posturing, it must be recognized that Commissioner Dunlap’s free political advertisement, and the questioning of a colleague’s faith, were a blatant misuse of the seat with which he has been entrusted.”

Thompson concluded, “Commission Chairman Jennifer Roberts has previously used her position to publicly reprimand Commissioners whose actions and attitudes at the dais have been unbecoming. She once again has the responsibility to challenge her colleagues, and to show that her leadership is not bound by party lines. The dais is not the place for mockery and blatant disregard for appropriate decorum. If Chairman Roberts and the incumbent leadership do not address the expectations of the seats to which they have been entrusted, the public may very well use the upcoming election as a referendum on the confidence they have in the current board.”

Officers Charged with Falsifying Crime Stats

Interesting news from the big apple's famed NYPD.

According the New York Post, Associated Press and other sources: The NYPD slapped four officers from the troubled 81st Precinct in Brooklyn with internal disciplinary charges for allegedly fudging crime statistics and misleading investigators, officials said.

Deputy Inspector Steven Mauriello, the former commanding officer of problem-plagued precinct, and three unnamed subordinates, including a sergeant and two patrol officers were not charged criminally and only face lesser penalties such as a pay cut or loss of vacation days, officials said.

Mauriello, who was transferred to a transit division over the summer, was charged with purposely tampering with grand larceny and car theft reports while misleading detectives from Internal Affairs.

The sergeant was accused of failing to verify that two officers had filed a robbery complaint and those same two officers were charged with not following the order to file the complaint.

They were not removed from duty.

A second sergeant was expected to be hit with internal charges next week, officials said.

The probe was launched in the wake of accusation by Officer Adrian Schoolcraft that officers were pressured by higher-ups to falsify records to improve the 81st Precinct’s crime statistics.

Schoolcraft, who went public with his accusations, had made hundreds of hours of secret tape recordings that he said are proof that supervisors ordered and condoned falsification of crime reports.

He claims he was forcibly taken to the psychiatric wing of a hospital last year as punishment for coming forward about the misconduct.

That episode was caught on tape and his superiors can be heard giving foul-mouthed orders to haul him off in handcuffs.

Schoolcraft, 35, has a $50 million lawsuit pending against the city.

He claims he was bounced from unit to unit when he tried to blow the whistle, and stripped of his gun and badge by a police department doctor whom he spoke to about his job-related anxiety.

Schoolcraft’s attorney Jon Norinsberg called the charges a good first step.

"But this is only a very small part of the problem that’s out there," he said. "As far as we’re concerned, this is a citywide problem and until the larger problem is addressed, and there is an investigation into all the precincts in New York, this is a very small step."

The NYPD has said the Schoolcraft allegations are an isolated incident.

The union that represents Mauriello did not immediately respond to a phone message.

Two More CMPD Officers Arrested

If the word on the 3rd shift is true, two more CMPD officers have mug shots and face IA review. Rumor has it that one was involved in a domestic situation and the other is a DWI, but no word from main stream media or CMPD brass.

Our Photo of Ken Burger Contest Winner(s)

Friday I went on a search for Katie of Jack's Cafe'.

You see I owed Katie 100 bucks for her winning entry in the "Photo of Ken Burger Dining Out" contest. And much to my surprise I found out that the cash was to be split 3 ways.

Sitting on a bar stool during the late morning lunch rush, Katie and friends fill me in on the details of their winning entry. Between hustling tables, working the cash register and taking to go orders I catch enough to understand that I've been had.

Seems that Ken Burger saw my offer of 100 bucks for a photo of the Post and Courier columnist dining out, and let the girls in on my challenge, effectively turning the tables on me.

So I guess you could say I was set up, but all is fair and good and still the best 100 bucks I've ever spent.

When asked what they thought about the entire "Food and Beverage" story uproar, the girls suggested that it was a little blown out of proportion, but also offered that Mr. Burger seemed a little surprised by the city wide heated reaction.

Clearly they enjoy Ken Burger as a regular as do the patrons of Jack's. A College of Charleston student name Tyler pointed out that he never knew who Ken Burger was until the Food and Beverage story was posted. Tyler's final comment, "seems like a really cool dude".

Not only did our little experiment, the blogging photo contest, produce the hoped for results, it showed that Ken Burger is a pretty good sport. Willing to take the heat as well as dish it out.

Jack's by the way is just as Ken describes it in his short piece posted earlier this week "Burger Joints are Vanishing". And Jack, well he kept his back to me the entire time I was there, as the place was hopping and it wasn't even 11.

Jack's Cafe' is truly an island of culinary perfection in the a sea of Charleston's Tapas trendy food hipness.

Idiot Tweet(s) of the Week!

@EdwinPeacockIII: "Just had the pleasure of introducing CMPD Police Chief Rodney Monroe and his wife Marvette to our Sunday School Class."

@EdwinPeacockIII: "The Chief was our 3rd speaker in the series: Leadership, Biblical Life Lessons. He did a great job. Thanks Chief Monroe!"

Peacock the 3rd is one of Chief Monroe's primary supporters who time and time again sucks up, then gulps down the Monroe kool-aid and leaves with a happy face. With Peacock the 3rd's actions regarding Marcus Jackson and his look the other way when it comes to CMPD management it doesn't surprise us that he'd post the above idiot tweets.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

The most contested political race in Mecklenburg County will be the County Board of Commissioners At-Large contest. Seven candidates with only the top three vote getters elected.

If you don't like the way Mecklenburg County Government is run, and if the thought of increased property taxes makes you feel used and abused, then this may be your best chance for a little pay back.

If you've had enough of Harry Jones, the Giving Tree, and all the accounting funny business at DSS and the County Health Department, the first Tuesday in November is your day.

If you are tired of huge bonuses being paid to county management, while school teachers are laid off and library hours are cut in half, and if you don't want to see your child's school closed, or your kids sports program cut, then this is your best chance to make a difference.

Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners (pictured left to right)
Front row: Vilma Leake (District 2), Harold Cogdell, Jr. (Vice-Chairman, At-Large),
Jennifer Roberts (Chairman, At-Large), Dan Murrey (At-Large), Karen Bentley (District 1). Back Row: George Dunlap (District 3), Dumont Clarke (District 4), Bill James (District 6), Neil Cooksey (District 5).

Above the current BOCC and the center three in first row, from now on to be known as the The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. These three Democrats have let Harry Jones make a joke out of Mecklenburg County and in the process they have taken cronyism to a new and disgusting level.

Cedar Posts is targeting The Good (Dr. Dan Murrey) The Bad (Harold Cogdell, Jr) and The Ugly (Jennifer Roberts) for elimination on November 2, 2010. It is not just time to take back American back, but also time to take back Mecklenburg County.

"The Good" Dr. Murrey besides backing Leake, Dunlap and Roberts on nearly every vote and being a solid supporter of Harry Jones may be one of the reasons our school system is in such dire straights today. Dr. Murrey was a member of both the 2006 Mecklenburg County School Building Solutions Committee, and a member of the 2007 Mecklenburg County Education Budget Advisory Committee. Both committees get failing grades in preparing CMS for the economic tsunami of 2008/2009.

"The Bad", Attorney Harold Cogdell, Jr often a voice of reason among board members follows Jennifer Roberts and fellow democrats lead on nearly every issue. This lap dog should be put out of the house, perhaps to higher office where yes men are respected.

"The Ugly" truth is that Jennifer Roberts is Harry Jones' biggest cheerleader and has turned a blind eye to a year long expose' of corruption and wrong doing within Mecklenburg County Government at Jones direction. Had Jones been the CEO at Bank of America he would have been removed from office long ago. But as far as Roberts is concerned Harry Jones deserved not only a big pat on the back but a pay raise as well!

Roberts is leading the crusade to increase your property taxes, and refuses to commit to a revenue neutral tax rate.

Enough is Enough because Charlotte/Mecklenburg deserves better.

It is time to put some common sense back on the BOCC by voting for Dan Ramirez, Jim Pendergraph and Corey Thompson on November 2, 2010.

Chile Miners Finally Home

The world watched and waited. Nearly 1 Billion people around the world tuned in to watch the last of the miners arrive at the surface of the Minera San Esteban Primera SA’s San Jose copper and gold mine.

One of many talking heads with media power house CNN said over and over again that this event was like watching events from the moon.

One look at the terrain in the area shows that the moon comparison is not that far off.

I don't know if it could be anymore isolated or barren looking.

Good to hear that all miners and the rescue team are back up on deck. And without any doubt the chat that went up everytime someone came out of the mine was one of the best examples of national pride I've ever seen.

"Chi! Chi! Chi! Le! Le! Le! Viva Chile!"

VIVA CHILE indeed!

CMPD Numbers Fact or Fiction?

Two years into Rodney Monroe's reign as Chief of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police department, questions remain about how the department reports crime statistics.

The Chief and his brass held a press conference last Wednesday to passionately refute statistics reported by NeigborhoodScout.com that ranked one area of Charlotte as one of the most dangerous in the nation.

According to the Charlotte Observer: Chief Rodney Monroe called the report a "kick in the teeth" while another police leader said researchers had run the numbers and called the classification simply 'inaccurate".

The study says there are 108.94 crimes per 1,000 residents in an area bounded by North Graham Street, Atando Avenue, Brevard Street and the Brookshire Freeway. There is a 1 in 9 chance of being a crime victim in the area, the survey says.

But police say they crunched the numbers for 2008 and 2009 and got significantly different answers.

"The numbers were quite off," said Deputy Police Chief Kerr Putney. "We tried, and we can't replicate that data."

In 2009, police say, there were 25 violent crimes per 1,000 people. In 2008, there were 33 crimes per 1,000 people.

But it all depends on whose numbers you use.

So let's take a simple look at the facts:

According to the 2000 census the population of census tract 52 is 3056. However the number of people ages 17-48 is 1201 this is the age range of violent crime victims reported during the 2008 year.

The number of violent crimes reported is 129 January to December 2008.

1201/129 gives you slightly more than 10.74 but it is a number pretty close to the NeighborhoodScout.com report.

Keep in mind that the area in question is heavy on warehouse and vacant space, the homes in the area are mainly northeast from 24th street on. But the area is also a pathway to other neighbor hoods. According to one CMPD officer many of victims are transiting the area, some to buy drugs in adjoining neighborhoods.

According to the "Map Crime in Your Neighborhood" feature there were 97 violent crimes in the area used in the study conducted by NeighborhoodScout.com for the one year period ending October 10, 2010. So maybe crime is down?

But pay attention to the disclaimer on the Observer website:

"This map shows information on selected crimes from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for areas within its jurisdiction. The data is refreshed weekly on Mondays. The data may be incomplete, and locations are approximate. For a similar map that shows weekly crime data citywide, visit charlotteobserver.com/crimemap. For a CMPD online crime map and other information, visit www.cmpd.org."

"Selected Crimes"? "Data may be incomplete"?

So who knows? It all depends on who you trust, and if you can trust a man who has lied to us time and time again in the past?

Now more magic numbers, this time a crime map for uptown:

Here the same mapping program shows 106 violent crimes in an area 1/2 the size of census tract 52. But the population is nearly 4 times the size as tract 52. So based on NeighborhoodScout.com Uptown is considerably safer.

Smoke and Mirrors? Nope just numbers..... the real truth is how safe you feel along North Tryon at 2AM.

Duke Energy's Voltron Goes Rainbow

If word on the web is true, Duke Energy's Tower nick named by the masses as "Voltron" came out last night in a rainbow display supporting gay pride and "National Coming Out Day". More about the special lighting from QNotes the LGBT blog here.

All I can say is it doesn't shock me, as I've always thought Reddy Kilowatt was pretty gay.

What does "shock" me is that Duke Energy via the building's big brother Wells Fargo would step into the quagmire of politics, just weeks after saying they would not use the lights of Voltron to endorse or support any political agenda.

Personally I could do without a "National Coming Out Day" and the hijacked rainbow symbolism.

10 Year Old Zahra Baker Still Missing

The missing persons case of Zahra Baker suddenly has a very familiar and troubling pattern of conflicting stories and a parent with outstanding warrants for theft.

In an amazing similarity to the Caylee Anthony case no one is certain when the last time they saw the home schooled Zahra Baker.

According to the Charlotte Observer, Hickory police reported on Monday morning that there have been no new developments in the search for the 10-year-old girl who has been missing since at least Saturday.

"There are a lot of answers that I just don't have now," Adkins told reporters. "There are some key questions that we're trying to get answers to."

Investigators said Sunday instead of focusing on a possible abduction, they were taking a closer look at the home where Zahra, who has a prosthetic leg and a hearing disability, disappeared from Saturday.

Zahra's father, Adam Baker, said during a morning TV interview that it was possible his wife could be involved in the disappearance, which was reported after a fire in the home's yard.

Elisa Baker was arrested Sunday on about a dozen charges unrelated to the girl's disappearance.

A reporter saw what appeared to be remnants of clothes among burned branches from the fire at the house.

The search warrant said that police responding to the fire early Saturday found what appeared to be a ransom note addressed to Adam Baker's boss on the windshield of Baker's car.

Police began searching for the girl Saturday afternoon, and the FBI, SBI and U.S. Marshals Service joined the case Sunday.

The girl's stepmother, Elisa Baker, was named a person of interest because of inconsistencies discovered during the investigation, police said.

The above photos were lifted from Ms. Baker's gothic skull and cross bones themed myspace page where she referrers to herself as "Miss Gothic Fairy" living in Queensland Australia.

Musical selections on her play list include Rage Against the Machine's Killing in the Name.

Zahra uses hearing aids, which were left at the house. She is white, approximately 5-foot-1 and weighs 85 pounds. She is home-schooled, police say.

Anyone with information about Zahra Baker should call Police at 911, or the FBI at (202)324-3000

Cedar Posts: From the tone of the myspace page there is something mildly troubling about a 40 year old mother going gothic, but what really concerns me is the small blog entries.

"One thing I have learnt this week is family really doesnt mean anything. And no matter the good you do ppl only judge you for the bad. See everyone makes mistakes in this life and I have made my share yet some ppl think they are perfect, never lie or do anything wrong. And your kids rip your heart out. Its a never-endin circle. Now i understand what my mom use to tell me about family and friends.I miss her so much."

"You know after doing some serious thinking I have a few things I would like to comment on. First off I am so sick of people judging me by how I look.I am gothic and very proud of it, all i hear is you'll grow out of it one day or when you gonna be normal, well first of, its something ur born into so you dont just grow out of it and to me this is normal. I hate it, I cant see how our world has come to this.and i dont understand why all the people from other countries want to come here. This country lives on lies we arent free nor do we look after our people here. truth is we suck."

Hottie of the Week Miss "H"

Happy 30th Birthday Miss H! Yea I know you'll going to "kill" me.

One day we'll finish the book. I promise~!
